TRANSPARENCY

At BUKI AKOMOLAFE we are committed to transparent ethical practices in all stages of the production process

Materials:

In our collections, we use only IVN Best and GOTS certified 100% organic cotton or African wax prints sourced in Europe, an homage to traditional West-African textile heritage. The range of colors in our cotton fabrics are all naturally plant-dyed, ensuring they are able to biodegrade at the end of their life.

We collaborate with artisans from small communities, through programs such as Living Blue Bangladesh, which provide guaranteed ethical production while working to revive a dying art practice. They have produced our small batch of high-quality indigo-dyed and hand-quilted fabrics.

All of our labels are made from recycled bottles.

Design and Production:

We design and produce only one collection a year as well as house a “permanent” basic range to create thoughtfully designed and long-lasting products.

All garments are made in Berlin, either in our studio or through a small production company, minimizing our carbon footprint and the need to ship overseas, while creating high-quality products and comfortable wages for those involved.

Our pieces are slowly and intentionally crafted; some products like our quilt pieces can even take days to produce, reflected in our clothing’s fair pricing.

We produce everything in small, limited batches to make sure that we don’t create any unnecessary waste or deadstock.

Waste:

We savor our fabrics and save any and all scraps we may produce. We believe in the idea of using what we have, whether that’s small scraps, or leftover fabrics collected from old projects and travels.

Our totes and Little shopper bags are made completely out of these leftover scraps to create one-of-a-kind intricately patchwork pieces. These scraps are also used in our hand-quilting workshops, encouraging our community to also use what they have in their own lives, while teaching the a traditional craft in a project that eliminates waste.
